Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv kills 10 and injures about 130 (updated)

It was a difficult night for the capital and a number of Regions.

On the night of 17 June, the Russians used Shaheds and missiles to shell Kyiv. Drones entered the capital from different directions, and there were reports of the launch of Kinzhals from MiG-31Ks and the threat of ballistic and cruise missiles. The air defence forces were active. The alert was cancelled at around 6 a.m. The threat to the capital lasted more than nine hours.

Damage has been reported in various areas. At 16:00, the death toll was revised: 10 people are known to have died.

Prior to this, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration reported that the number of victims had risen, with the bodies of five more people recovered from the rubble. As of 14:11, 139 people were known to have been injured.

In particular, three people were killed in Darnytskyy district. Among the wounded, 69 were hospitalised. Cluster munitions were found near the impact sites. 

Helicopters were used to extinguish a fire at one of the strike sites.

“Last night, the enemy used 175 drones, more than 14 cruise missiles, and at least two ballistic missiles in Kyiv and the surrounding area,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the KCMA.

One person, a 62-year-old US citizen, died in a house near the site of the attack, said Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko.

There were power outages in some parts of Kyiv.

As of 11:28 a.m., according to the Kyiv City Military Administration, damage has been reported in seven districts. In particular:

Solomyanskyy district

  • A Russian UAV hit a dormitory (4th–5th floors), no fire reported
  • A missile hit a nine-storey residential building. A rescue operation and rubble removal are underway
  • Damage to a five-storey residential building, including destruction of the roof and ceiling
  • Damage to a boarding school
  • Damage to a service station
  • Russian aerial targets and fragments of downed targets fell in the area of non-residential buildings in several locations. Rescuers have been deployed at the scene, and firefighting operations are underway

Svyatoshynskyy district

  • Destruction of a lift shaft and an adjacent apartment following a Russian UAV strike on a 12-storey residential building
  • Damage and fire in a non-residential area

Darnytskyy district

  • Damage to a lyceum and a kindergarten
  • Damage on the 10th–17th floors of a 20-storey residential building
  • Broken windows in apartment buildings in several locations
  • Damage to buildings and a Ukrzaliznytsia train
  • Damage with fire in several locations

Dniprovskyy district

  • Damage to the wall of a residential building after a fragment of a downed enemy aerial target became lodged in it
  • Falling debris and damage at several locations in different parts of the district. The Ukrzaliznytsia contact network was also damaged

Podilskyy district

  • Debris from downed air targets fell at several locations, with no significant damage

Obolon district

  • A private car was damaged

Shevchenkivskyy district

  • Damage to windows of buildings and cars in several locations
  • Fires broke out at the scene and were extinguished by the State Emergency Service

Overall, the attack resulted in widespread damage to vehicles, craters, and structural damage to buildings – in total, at more than 30 locations.

Rescuers, police, other law enforcement agencies, and city and district utility services are involved in the response and repair of the damage. Rescuers have contained and extinguished fires covering more than 10,000 square metres.

Humanitarian headquarters have been set up in Solomyanskyy, Darnytskyy and Shevchenkivskyy districts to assist the population. Utility crews and equipment from less-affected districts are also involved in the emergency response.
