The death of the MP and well-known public figure was confirmed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Andriy Parubiy, a member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was killed today in Lviv. The police said that around noon they received a report of a shooting, specifically in the Frankivsk district of the city.

The victim died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Law enforcement officials said that he was a well-known “public and political figure born in 1971”, but did not name him.

“Law enforcement officers are taking all measures to establish the identity of the shooter and his whereabouts. All details will be disclosed in the manner and to the extent provided for by criminal procedural law,” the statement said.

According to LB sources, the victim was Andriy Parubiy, a current member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already confirmed the politician’s murder.

“Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported on the first known circumstances of the horrific murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy has died. My condolences to his family and loved ones. All necessary forces and resources have been mobilised to investigate and search for the killer,” he said.

The head of the Lviv Regional State Administration reported that Parubiy died before the arrival of medical personnel. Operation Siren was launched to apprehend the perpetrator.

As of 17:30 on 30 August, Andriy Parubiy’s killer had not been apprehended.

MP of the 6th–9th convocations. In the 8th convocation, he was the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.

He graduated from the History Department of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and completed his postgraduate studies at Lviv Polytechnic National University, specialising in political science and sociology. In 1990, he became a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council, and in 1991, together with Oleh Tyahnybok, he co-founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine, which in 2004 transformed into Svoboda, according to the biographical information provided by the CHESNO Movement.

In 2002, he was elected to the Lviv Regional Council for the third time. In 2004, he took an active part in the Orange Revolution.

He became a member of parliament for the first time in 2007, representing the Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defence bloc. In 2010, the Prosecutor General’s Office under Viktor Yanukovych sought to strip him of his immunity for throwing eggs in the Rada chamber during the ratification of the Kharkiv agreements.

In 2012, Parubiy left Our Ukraine and joined the Front for Change. In 2012, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada from Fatherland as an independent.

In 2013–2014, he was the commander of the Maydan and led the Self-Defence Forces.

In 2014, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada from the People’s Front party and served as secretary of the National Security and Defence Council that same year. In 2016, he became speaker of the Verkhovna Rada after Volodymyr Groysman was appointed prime minister.

In 2019, he became a MP from European Solidarity as an independent. He was a member of the Committee on National Security and Defence.

Andriy Parubiy actively opposed pro-Russian forces in the Verkhovna Rada, defended the interests of the Ukrainian language, and fought against rapprochement with Russia. In 2019, he tried to disrupt a teleconference that the pro-Russian TV channel NewsOne was preparing with Russia.
