This was explained as a ‘response’ to Ukraine blocking the Hungarian pro-Russian resources Origo and Demokrata.

Hungary has banned a number of Ukrainian publications in response to Ukraine's ban on two pro-Russian Hungarian publications.

This was announced by the Minister of the Prime Minister's Office of Hungary, Gergely Gulyás .

He stated that Ukraine had blocked the Hungarian publications Origo and Demokrata ‘because they dared to critically cover the policy of sanctions against Russia, military support for Ukraine, and portray the European Union and NATO as fragmented and not very effective organisations.’

Gulyás explained that, ‘guided by the principle of reciprocity,’ Hungary has introduced ‘mirror measures’ against a number of Ukrainian news portals, which will no longer be accessible in Hungary as of today, 29 September.

These include:

  • tsn.ua
  • oboz.ua
  • anons-zak.com.ua
  • ungvar.uz.ua/
  • zakarpattya.net.ua/
  • pravda.com.ua
  • hromadske.ua
  • nv.ua
  • lb.ua
  • insiderinfo.com.ua
  • uaonline.com.ua
  • eurointegration.com.ua

"I don't think many people read Ukrainska Pravda or even want to. However, a sovereign state should respond proportionately to a completely unfounded attack... If someone wants censorship, it is better to limit Soros' interference in the internal politics of sovereign countries, rather than freedom of expression on this issue," Gulyás wrote.
