On 8 March 2026, the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw will host an event as part of the public programme of the Ukrainian pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia. The central element of the meeting will be the sculpture Origami Deer (2019) by Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova, presented as part of the Security Guarantees project, curated by Kseniya Malykh and Leonid Marushchak.
The sculpture was created as a permanent installation in the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Region. It appeared on the site of a dismantled Soviet combat aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
In 2024, when the front line approached the city, the work had to be dismantled and evacuated to a safer location. This was carried out by Zhanna Kadyrova, Leonid Marushchak and a team of city workers. In 2025, the deer sculpture began its journey to Venice, becoming a symbolic element of a project that reflects on the theme of unfulfilled security guarantees and the fragility of peace.
The programme of the Warsaw event includes an all-day presentation of the sculpture, a screening of the short documentary film IDP (2025) by director Zhanna Kadyrova about the evacuation of the work from Pokrovsk, and a conversation with the artist and Leonid Marushchak.
There will also be a discussion entitled Public Art at Risk: Poland and Ukraine, with the participation of Polish artist Julita Wójcik and Zhanna Kadyrova. It will be moderated by art historian Iwona Kurcz. Musical performances are planned for the evening.
The Warsaw event is part of an international programme preceding the presentation of the Ukrainian project at La Biennale di Venezia. Subsequent events will take place in Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Brussels and Paris.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, UNESCO and Sushko Philanthropy.
