A panel discussion dedicated to Taras Shevchenko, a poet, artist and thinker considered one of the founders of modern Ukrainian culture, will be held at Ukraine House in Denmark in Copenhagen.

During the event, participants will discuss how Shevchenko can be read and interpreted today and why his ideas about freedom, dignity and justice remain highly relevant during the full-scale war. The conversation will focus on how the poet’s legacy resonates in contemporary cultural and academic discourse. Two speakers will join the discussion online.

Literary scholar and professor Hryhoriy Hrabovych (Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute / Harvard Ukrainian Studies) will speak about Shevchenko in the context of his upcoming academic book. His presentation will focus on the intellectual challenges facing Ukrainian studies today, as well as how Russia’s war against Ukraine is prompting researchers to reconsider established approaches and assumptions in Shevchenko studies.

Literary critic, cultural studies scholar, poet and translator Olena Haleta will speak about Shevchenko’s presence in contemporary culture. In her research, she examines the poet’s legacy through the prism of modernism, and during her presentation she will share her observations on how Shevchenko manifests and transforms in contemporary cultural discourse.

The event will take place on 15 March at 3 p.m.
