Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, known for a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s including "Total Eclipse of the Heart", "Holding Out for a Hero" and "It's a Heartache", has died at the age of 75.

The BBC reports.

A statement on her website said she died unexpectedly last night in a Portuguese hospital “as a result of an illness for which she was being treated”.

Her biggest hit was 1983’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. The song reached one billion streams on Spotify earlier this year. As she did not write the song, Tyler said she earned “almost nothing” from it.

In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2022, Tyler was awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music.

The singer, born Gaynor Hopkins, chose her stage name by reading a newspaper and jotting down random first and last names she liked.

In May, she was placed in an induced coma after emergency bowel surgery in Portugal. Last month, her spokesperson said she had come out of the coma but remained “very ill and in intensive care”.
