The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has proposed adopting additional European sanctions against Russia as early as this autumn.
She wrote about it on the social network X.
“Today I joined the Coalition of the Willing to discuss strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, support over the winter period, and further pressure on Moscow,” Kallas said.
She recalled that, thanks to the Ukraine Support Credit for 2026–2027, the EU has already allocated €8.47 billion for defence support, and announced preparations for additional payments to strengthen air defence.
Separately, Kallas said she is proposing the adoption of “tougher sanctions” against Russia as early as this autumn.
“And we are tightening the net even further around Russia’s shadow fleet to deprive Moscow of the funds to wage war... The stronger we make Ukraine, the sooner we will force Russia to come to the negotiating table,” the EU’s High Representative stressed.
- As a reminder, earlier Kallas said in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt that the EU plans to introduce the largest sanctions package against Russia in the autumn.
- In July, the EU approved the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, introducing, among other things, new restrictions on the Russian banking sector and cryptocurrency networks.
- The EU is considering a new approach to imposing sanctions against Russia. In particular, officials are looking for ways to speed up the approval of more narrowly targeted financial sanctions so that member states have fewer opportunities to use their veto during negotiations.
