The Defence Procurement Agency (DOT) has for the first time announced a tender to purchase ground robotic systems whose specifications meet the tactical and technical requirements approved by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. The Ministry of Defence reported this.
The Defence Procurement Agency plans to procure two types of ground robotic systems:
- logistics systems — for transporting cargo, delivering essential supplies and evacuating the wounded;
- strike systems — for engaging designated targets.
The ministry notes that the systems must be capable of operating on rough terrain, provide reliable remote control, and transmit video and data on the system’s operation to the operator.
Manufacturers and suppliers whose products meet the established specifications and requirements are invited to take part in the procurement. One of the key conditions is having at least one codified item in the ground robotic systems category. The procurement will take place in a closed environment, in compliance with security requirements for defence procurement.
“The tender will be conducted using a system that has already proven its effectiveness. The systems are divided into classes by operating range and payload weight. Each class has 4 or 5 lots. At the same time, a single manufacturer will be able to receive no more than half of the order within one class,” explained Mstyslav Banik, Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine.
According to him, this approach will make it possible to involve several manufacturers in supply and create more opportunities for competition between them. Banik stressed that robotic platforms have long since become indispensable on the front line — some tasks are simply impossible to carry out without them. Therefore, he said, the Ministry of Defence’s task is to ensure an uninterrupted supply of these systems to the armed forces: at an affordable price, in the required quality and quantity, and on time.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defence emphasised that the need for ground robotic systems is steadily growing. To significantly expand their use along the front line, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has substantially increased procurement volumes and the defined level of demand for ground robotic systems this year.
In particular, more than 22,000 units of ground robotic systems have already been contracted, almost twice the figure for the entire previous year. Service personnel have also already ordered ground robotic systems worth nearly UAH 1.9 billion via the Brave1 Market marketplace under the eBaly programme.
