The Ministry of Foreign Affairs needs only a single paragraph of amendments to the law, but organising voting abroad will be a huge project.
This was stated by First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Korniienko in an interview with LB.ua.
According to him, the legislative part of the problem is minimal.
“When it comes to post-war elections, there are issues that require extensive changes to the law, and there are others where a single line is enough. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked for literally one paragraph: to allow polling stations to be opened and voting to be conducted outside diplomatic missions,” Korniienko said.
However, he stresses that implementation will be far more complicated.
“This will need to be done quickly: from the moment the law is adopted to the start of the elections there will not be much time, perhaps half a year. In that time, an entire network of small institutions will have to be created from scratch, because a polling station is an institution,” the First Deputy Speaker noted.
He уточнює, that this primarily concerns the countries with the largest Ukrainian communities.
“80–85% of Ukrainians abroad are in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada,” Korniienko said.
