The Moscow oil refinery, owned by Gazprom Neft, has suspended crude oil processing following an attack by Ukrainian drones on 20 September.
This was reported by Reuters, citing its own sources.
According to the agency’s sources, after drones fell on the refinery’s premises, both primary oil processing units caught fire.
Reuters sources note that repairing the damage and restoring operations could take several weeks.
Reuters also points out that fuel produced by the Moscow refinery has not been offered for sale on the St Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange since 21 September.
One of the damaged units can process 21.4 thousand tonnes of oil per day. That is about 53% of the Moscow refinery’s total capacity.
The remaining 47% of capacity is provided by the combined oil processing unit “Euro+”, which has a throughput of 18.8 thousand tonnes per day.
According to Reuters sources, in 2024 the Moscow refinery processed 11.6 million tonnes of crude oil. That is roughly 230,000 barrels per day.
In the same year, the plant produced 2.9 million tonnes of petrol, 3.2 million tonnes of diesel fuel, and 1.3 million tonnes of bitumen.
- On 20 September, Ukraine’s Defence Forces struck the Moscow refinery. The General Staff confirmed hits on the AVT-6 primary processing unit, the integrated oil processing unit, and the isomerisation unit.
- During the operation, Ukrainian forces used a range of long-range systems, including FP-1, RZ-100, MICH-2000, “Palianytsia”, Vendetta, “Liutyi”, “Bars”, “Flamingo”, “Sichen” and Pelican.
