Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has criticised the European Union’s approach to talks on Ukraine’s accession.

The head of the Albanian government recalled the long path Western Balkan countries have taken towards the bloc and noted that, at the time, East Germany in 1989 was not required to fulfil all 33 negotiating chapters, European Pravda reports, citing Welt.

According to Rama, the EU’s promises to admit Ukraine through the standard procedure while meeting all criteria are untrue, because it is impossible to do so through the normal process.

The Prime Minister stressed that a realistic solution for Brussels would be to bring Ukraine into the negotiations now and grant it full membership on the basis of merit.

  • The EU does not see it that way. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that by the end of this year the EU could open more clusters of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and the process would be based on our country’s merits without privileges.
  • Kos stressed that Europe is currently showing the greatest progress on enlargement in the past 25 years, with Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine leading among the candidates.
