German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that Germany will fund several tens of thousands of Quantum Systems interceptor drones for Ukraine. Quantum Systems said this in a press release.
During a visit to Kyiv, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Economy and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche met with representatives of Quantum Systems. The company told the delegation how it is setting up production in wartime conditions, training operators and providing support for its systems. They also discussed the further expansion of unmanned systems production in Ukraine.
The interceptor drones were developed by the Ukrainian team at Quantum WIY Industries. The company said their mission is to protect cities, civilian facilities and critical infrastructure from attacks by enemy UAVs. The joint production programme was a response to Russia’s use of strike drones with jet engines. To counter them, interceptors are needed that can be produced and deployed in far greater numbers, Quantum WIY Industries explains.
“For QWI, this project makes it possible to combine our engineering expertise with our partners’ manufacturing capabilities and scale up production in Ukraine. Our priority is simple: to deliver more interceptors to Ukrainian defenders as quickly as possible. We will continue to improve our systems based on feedback from the units that use them, and build production that can rapidly adapt to new threats,” said the CEO of Quantum WIY Industries.
The company added that Quantum Systems is implementing this project through joint German-Ukrainian ventures. These include Quantum Frontline Industries, Quantum WIY Industries and Quantum Tencore Industries. This model combines Ukrainian combat experience with German industrial capacity. As a result, systems for Ukraine can be produced in larger volumes, while Germany and its allies gain long-term manufacturing capabilities, Quantum WIY Industries explains.
During a roundtable with representatives of the defence industry, attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Quantum Systems and Fire Point also signed a memorandum of understanding. The companies will jointly develop unmanned technologies and means of countering modern aerial threats.
Quantum Systems is a German defence company that develops and manufactures unmanned systems for defence, security and civilian resilience. Its portfolio brings together hardware and software, as well as artificial intelligence technologies in the field of unmanned systems, sensors and counter-unmanned solutions in the air, on land, at sea and in adjacent domains.
By way of reminder, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train on Sunday, 4 October. He said the main purpose of his visit was to demonstrate Germany’s continued support for Ukraine.
During the visit to Kyiv by the German delegation led by Friedrich Merz, 15 documents were signed and agreements were reached worth €8.5 billion, among other things.
