Lithuania is strengthening security along its border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region. The armed forces will be deployed to support border guards.

This was reported by Lithuania’s Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas.

“I have asked the Minister of National Defence, Roberts Kaunas, to deploy the Lithuanian Armed Forces to help border guards protect the border with the Kaliningrad region,” the statement said.

According to him, this is linked to an incident on the Latvian border, when a hostile sabotage and reconnaissance group crossed into the country’s territory.

The Interior Minister added that, in this way, Lithuania is taking preventive measures against the backdrop of the security situation and the likely mobilisation in Russia.

“I want to clarify: the situation on the Lithuanian border is currently calm, and there are no grounds for panic. The deployment of troops is a preventive decision so that we are prepared and can prevent similar incidents,” Katelynas said.
