The Netherlands considers the US sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court to be a new escalation, but hopes to resolve the situation through talks.
Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Tom Berendsen said this on the social network X.
According to the minister, The Hague does not support Washington’s decision and continues to defend the court.
“The announced sanctions against the International Criminal Court are an undesirable and new escalation. I deeply regret this new step. We firmly support the court,” Berendsen wrote.
At the same time, he noted that the restrictions will not take effect immediately. This will allow service providers, for the time being, to continue working with the ICC.
The minister stressed that the six-month delay also leaves time for negotiations. The Netherlands intends to discuss this possibility with other states parties to the court.
- The administration of US President Donald Trump is imposing sanctions on officials of the International Criminal Court amid investigations into Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip and an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
- The United States does not recognise the ICC’s jurisdiction over its citizens, as the country has not joined the court. Rubio accused the ICC of trying to expand its powers at the expense of American sovereignty.
