Ukraine’s negotiating team remains in constant contact with American representatives. A new meeting could be agreed in the coming days, President Volodymyr Zelensky said at a briefing in Brussels.

He added that, against the backdrop of a new escalation in relations, they would “continue to live and fight — the main thing is to live with dignity”. He explained that he had asked partners for additional missiles for air defence systems in case Russia does not adhere to the energy truce.

“My proposal was as follows: OK, we are partners, you believe you need this (the diesel deal. – Ed.), although all the analysis says it does not affect the price, but nevertheless, right now it is not about the reasons but about the consequences. You need it, but they will attack our energy system. If there is no ceasefire, give us anti-ballistic missiles so that I can protect energy facilities. Don’t give very many — just for the period you need the diesel deal. I didn’t get that,” he said.

The head of state also commented on remarks by US President Donald Trump that it is easier for him to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin than with Zelensky. Volodymyr Zelensky said it is easier for him to negotiate with Trump than with Putin.

He is convinced that after the diesel deal, gas and banking sanctions against the aggressor could also be eased, so Ukraine needs to push back against this.
