Romanian authorities have tightened security at all strategic facilities and defence platforms across the country.

The decision was taken after an explosion at the Carfil plant in Brașov, which Prime Minister of Romania Luca Niculescu said was carried out by a network run by Russian security services, Digi24 reports.

Security services and law enforcement have already detained three members of the sabotage group — two Belarusian citizens and one Ukrainian. They were living in EU countries and acted on direct instructions from the Russian Federation.

The head of the Romanian government thanked the security forces for their swift response and noted that they had managed to prevent many other incidents. He also urged the public to remain as vigilant as possible while the investigation continues.

  • Romanian intelligence has uncovered a sabotage network directly run by the Russian security services. The network is linked to a fire that broke out on 14 September at an industrial complex in Brașov, in close proximity to CARFIL SA — a subsidiary of the national corporation ROMARM.
  • Recently, Romanian intelligence thwarted an act of sabotage on the country’s territory that was being prepared by a Russian citizen.
  • As a result, the Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to lodge a protest.
