The court found a serviceman of the Russian armed forces guilty of violating the laws and customs of war and sentenced him in absentia to 12 years’ imprisonment.
This was reported by the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The convicted man is a sergeant and senior reconnaissance scout in the reconnaissance battalion of the 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, who took part in the occupation of Kyiv Region.
According to the investigation, on 29 March 2022 in the occupied village of Andriivka in Bucha District, the convicted man, together with other occupiers, stopped a local resident in the street. The man was in civilian clothes, unarmed, and posed no threat. Threatening him with a weapon, the Russians took him to one of the local houses.
There, the serviceman held a pistol to the victim’s head and demanded that he confess to involvement with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and disclose the locations of Ukrainian units. When he did not get the information, the convicted man struck the victim around ten times on the head with the pistol and threatened to kill him.
After the torture, the victim was locked in a garage, where he was held at gunpoint for three days — from 29 to 31 March 2022 — until he was freed by another resident.
Law enforcement officers collected witness statements, carried out photo identifications, investigative experiments, and an inspection of the scene. The actions of the Russian serviceman were classified as cruel treatment of the civilian population.
