China is in contact with the United States and Russia about a possible meeting between their presidents at the APEC summit.
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have already publicly expressed interest in meeting Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit taking place this month, Bloomberg reports.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at a briefing in Beijing on 4 November that Beijing is open to this format of talks and is maintaining dialogue with the relevant parties about a potential meeting of the leaders of China, Russia and the United States.
Such a meeting would be an important step for Russia in its efforts to emerge from international isolation following its invasion of Ukraine. It could also potentially allow Xi Jinping to act as a mediator in bringing Putin and Trump closer together.
