Minister pledges drop in energy tariffs

Electricity bills in Ukraine may drop significantly starting next February, said Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Ihor Nasalik.

"Maybe [the chief of national energy regulator] Dmytro Vovk will be mad at me, but we think that electricity tariffs will be significantly reduced rather than risen starting next February, March and April. That would be the work of the new ministry," RBC-Ukraine quoted Nasalik as saying at a joint session of two parliamentary committees on 15 September.

In February 2015, the National Commission on Energy Regulation and Public Utilities approved a gradual increase in energy tariffs in five stages.

The tariffs have been raised four times since, the most recent was announced on1 September.

The final stage was scheduled to take place on 1 March 2017.

A significant increase in electricity and gas tariffs was among Ukraine's commitment before the IMF.
