Fake alcohol killing spree takes 49 lives

The number of poisoning incidents caused by counterfeit alcohol in Ukraine has reached 96 by 6.00 p.m. on 4 October. Of them 49 people did not survive, the State Service of Food Safety and Customer Protection has said.

During the day seven more people died, all of them in Kharkiv Region. Overall, 77 people got poisoned there, of whom 36 did not make it. The tests conducted on 23 victims revealed the presence of methanol.

There were no new cases reported in other regions.

People started dying from counterfeit vodka on 21 September. First, the fatalities were registered in Kharkiv Region alone, but were then followed by reports from Donetsk and Luhansk regions and Rubizhne.

Police have detained the key suppliers of counterfeit alcohol in Kharkiv and Donbas, who distributed it in eastern Ukraine and Mykolayiv Region. The 27-year-old mastermind of this illegal business was detained. Four tonnes of alcohol were confiscated from him. Police learnt that 3 tonnes of counterfeit alcohol had gone on sale.
