Three Ukrainian troops were killed and one wounded when pro-Russian militants tried to capture Avdiyivka, Donetsk Region on the morning of 29 January 2017, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry's spokesman for antiterrorist operation (ATO) issues, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, has said at a briefing.

"Among ATO troops on this front line, one serviceman was killed, two more succumbed to grave wounds while one was wounded but survived," he said.

According to Motuzyanyk, the militants' attack failed and "the enemy, which suffered losses, had to retreat eastwards".

"However the situation remains very tense as the enemy continues to fire on our positions with artillery and mortars, though without making attempts to storm them. Ukrainian troops along the entire front line are on high alert to meet the enemy with fire," he said.

The militants started storming the ATO forces' positions in Avdiyivka on the morning of 29 January. An unexploded shell fired from the occupied territory was found in central Avdiyivka this morning. A local civilian was wounded as a result of a militant attack on Avdiyivka.
