The petition to the North Atlantic Alliance to close the airspace over Ukraine gathered more than 1 million votes. It was created on February 26. At the time of this news, the petition has received 1,094,044 votes (109% of what is needed for consideration).

“We, people all over the world, ask NATO member states to close the sky over Ukraine and bring NATO peacekeeping mission to Ukraine, provide military help to Kyiv and support Ukrainian people, how it was done, for example, in Israel,” - the petition text states.

Petitions on the European website Open Petition can be signed by citizens from anywhere in the world.

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov stated that the no-fly zone guarantees safety for Ukrainians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that closing the sky over the Ukrainian state is not involving NATO states in the war.

On February 27, Members of the US Congress from both parties, Gerry Connolly and Mike Turner, appealed to President Joe Biden to close the sky over Ukraine, where since February 24, Russian forces have been shelling and destroying critical infrastructure, missiles are hitting residential buildings, people are dying.

The no-fly zone means that the sky is patrolled by military aircraft, the airspace is protected by the air defense systems. When the sky is closed, all the military aircraft that fly into the no-fly zone are shot down.
