Actual numbers are much higher: as of 12 a.m., March 8, the UN counted 516 dead and 908 wounded in Ukraine

From 24 February 2022, when Russia started the war against Ukraine until 12 a.m. on 8 March 2022 the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 1,424 civilian casualties in the country (1335 in the report for the previous day), including 516 killed (474 for the previous day), the “Interfax Ukraine” reports.

“OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, especially in Government-controlled territory and especially in recent days, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration.” the statement says.

According to the document, this concerns, for example, the towns of Volnovakha, Mariupol, Izium where there are allegations of hundreds of civilian casualties. These figures are being further corroborated and are not included in the above statistics.

“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multi-launch rocket systems, and missile and airstrikes.” the statement says.

According to the UN corroborated data, 98 men, 60 women, 9 boys, and 5 girls were killed, at the same time the sex of 23 children and 321 adults is yet unknown.

Among 908 injured there are 12 girls and 4 boys and also 34 children, whose sex is yet unknown.

Compared to the previous day, according to UN data, the number of children killed increased by ten times, the number of injured increased by six times.

OHCHR notes that 87 (72) dead and 349 (337) wounded were recorded in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the north on 9 March in a government-controlled area, and 24 (24) dead and 113 (112) wounded in a self-proclaimed "republics".

In other Government-controlled regions of Ukraine (Kyiv, as well as in Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Sumy, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions), the UN recorded 405 (378) dead and 446 (412) wounded.

OHCHR notes the report of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, according to which as of 12 a.m. 8 March, 41 children had been killed and 76 injured.

OHCHR also notes a report by the National Police of Kharkiv region, according to which as of 6 p.m. 8 March, the total number of civilian casualties in the Kharkiv region was 170 killed (including 5 children) and 368 injured.

An increase in figures in this update compared with the previous update (as of 12 midnight 7 March 2022 local time) should not be attributed to civilian casualties that occurred on 8 March only, as during the day OHCHR also corroborated casualties that occurred on previous days, the document specifies.
