All Ukrainian NPPs are working, radiation background is within normal limits - Energoatom

The National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine “Enerhoatom” published information on the operations of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants. As of 11 a.m. on 10 March 2022, the nuclear power plants of Ukraine are operating stably.

The current capacity of all four Ukrainian NPPs provides the necessary volumes of electricity production for the country's needs. The statement says that radiation, fire, and ecological conditions on nuclear power plants and nearby territories are within normal limits.

Due to Russia’s aggression, Energoatom has tightened control and made the safety of the nuclear facilities a top priority.

"The main equipment of the reactor compartments of power units, premises and buildings of power plants, the perimeters of protected areas and neighboring territories, as well as critical NPP facilities outside their protected areas, are under strict supervision and control," the company says.

Zaporizhzhia NPP and the town of Enerhodar have been controlled by the Russian military for six days now. As of the morning of March 10, there are 50 equipment units, around 400 Russian soldiers, and many explosives and weapons on the territory of the NPP.

Energoatom reminded that Ukrainian staff is working on all six power units at Zaporizhzhia NPP. However, they have to conform with the occupiers regarding technical issues. The NPP’s team is under tremendous psychological pressure from the occupiers.

“It negatively affects the work and puts the nuclear and radiation safety at risk. The accident can happen at any time, and the consequences are unpredictable,” the Ukrainian nuclear energy company stresses.

Currently, there are two power units of the Zaporizhzhia NPP working in the network. On 7 March 2022, due to damage during the Russian shelling of the block transformer, power unit №6 was put into an emergency repair.

No changes in the radiation status at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site and neighboring territories have been recorded.

Two 750 kW high-voltage lines - Zaporizhzhia and South Donbas - remain disconnected due to damage.

Due to the actual siege of Energodar, there are still problems with fuel, food, and essential medicines. Today, there will be a second attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to the city.
