Sanctions to prevent China from buying oil from Russia - Janet Yellen

Sanctions against Russia in response to the military invasion of Ukraine will limit, among other things, China's ability to buy oil from Russia.

This was stated by US Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen, according to Voice of America.

At the same time, the US Secretary of Treasury noted that the Chinese authorities are not yet trying to "deliberately reduce or compensate for the effect" of sanctions against Moscow.

"It seems that Chinese financial institutions, which conduct business in dollars and euros, are worried about the effect of sanctions," Yellen said in an interview with the Washington Post.

Janet Yellen also noted that in the long run, the US position in the export of the latest semiconductors and other modern technologies will help "reduce Russia's ability to make forceful decisions and continue to intimidate its neighbours."

On 8 March 2022, the United States banned Russian oil and gas imports.

On 9 March 2022, United States Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said that the United States could take "destructive" measures against Chinese companies that ignore sanctions against Russia, warning that they will be cut off from US hardware and software.
