Today Roskomnadzor (Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media) announced that the social network channel Instagram will be blocked in Russia. YouTube is beginning to promptly block Russian state media channels throughout the world.

The news was announced by the Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, on his Telegram channel.

“Let me remind you that earlier YouTube blocked lots of Russian propaganda channels operating in Ukraine. Now Russia will block YouTube. It’s only a matter of time,” the minister noted.

Fedorov added that today he will make another official appeal to Google and Apple about blocking Google Play and App Store.

As reported earlier, Roskomsvoboda [a Russian NGO supporting open self-regulatory networks] announced the possible blocking of YouTube, which was thought to possibly begin on 2 March.

Today, Roskomnadzor has announced that Instagram will be blocked in Russia due to “calls [on its site] for violence in relation to Russians and the Russian army”.
