The Latvian Post has stopped postal money orders to and from Russia and Belarus, and has issued a special stamp dedicated to Ukraine under the slogan "We are with you".
This was reported by the press service of the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia.
Today, on 11 March, the Ambassador of Ukraine Oleksandr Mishchenko met representatives of the Latvian National Postal Operator (Latvijas Pasts - Latvian Post) at the Ukrainian Embassy in Latvia. The representatives were Director of the Department of Postal Values and Philately, Edmunds Bebris, and Head of External Communications, Guntega Varpa.
During the meeting, representatives of the Latvian Post presented the original of the new postage stamp with Ukrainian symbols, as well as envelopes created in support of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. The stamp and envelopes were officially redeemed on 10 March and handed over to the post offices for sale.
The new project envisages that 50% of the proceeds from the sale of these postal products will be donated to support the citizens of Ukraine through the National Charitable Foundation of Latvia Ziedot.lv.
In addition, representatives of the Latvian Post said that Ukrainian citizens arriving in Latvia, including Ukrainian refugees, will be able to open postal accounts in Latvian post offices under a simplified procedure, enabling them to make money transfers to accounts in, and from, Ukraine, as well as to credit institutions in Latvia and abroad.
It will also be possible to deposit and withdraw cash from one’s account and pay bills.
The Embassy stressed that in response to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, Latvia's national postal operator had stopped delivering all types of press materials from Russia and Belarus, removing newspapers, magazines and other goods produced in these countries from the Latvian post offices. It had also stopped accepting commercial orders to Russia and Belarus.
