Accident at Sumykhimprom fully eliminated, company employee injured

The accident at the Sumykhimprom chemical plant has been fully eliminated, there is no threat to people.

This has been reported by the company’s press service.

An ammonia pipeline at the complex mineral fertilizers unit was damaged as a result of shelling of the plant at 02:58 on 21 March.

After the pipeline was depressurized, emergency protection systems were triggered, with a slight leakage of ammonia.

As for now, the consequences of the accident have been completely eliminated by the plant workers and State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine – the pipeline is sealed, with a special bandage applied. 

SES has completed its work to ensure deposition of the ammonia clouds. Currently, there is no threat to people or the environment. 

As the press release states, “The company staff and the SES representative demonstrated their courage and coordinated actions when eliminating the consequences of the accident. All their actions were in line with the Emergency Management Plan. Unfortunately, one of the company employees was injured, he has already received emergency medical care”.

Company staff started the routine activities to restore the technological process.

Operation of Sumykhimprom chemical plant was urgently suspended on the first day of war, on 24 February 2022.
