The majority of City Council deputies of Enerhodar, occupied by Russian troops now, have resigned, reported Dmytro Orlov, city mayor.
He noted that elected representatives have adopted such a decision due to inability to perform their duties within the Ukrainian legal framework.
"To prevent the use of their votes under duress - to create any illegitimate "people's republics" on Enerhodar territory under the rule of aggressor-state, what occupiers have tended to execute recently, such a decision was adopted by everyone personally,” - emphasized Orlov.
Mayor announced that resigned deputies will keep being involved in public activities and take care of city residents.
Orlov added that protected budget expense categories (salaries of employees of municipal enterprises and public sector, utilities) will be financed despite City Council suspension of operation. However, "under condition of the State Treasury of Ukraine operation," added the mayor.
On March 12, the deputy of the Kherson Regional Council reported that occupiers have been preparing a referendum on creation of so-called "Kherson People's Republic" and called deputies of Сouncil by phone to offer collaboration.
