Merkel stands by decision to block Ukraine from NATO, snubs invitation to Bucha

Former German Сhancellor Angela Merkel believes her decision not to admit Ukraine to NATO in 2008 was right despite the criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The spokeswoman of Merkel said this in response to the request of DPA agency, writes “European Pravda”.

“Federal Chancellor Doctor Angela Merkel supports her decisions regarding the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008,” the spokeswoman said.

At the same time, Merkel supported international efforts to stop the russian war against Ukraine but did not react to the invitation to visit Bucha.

"Considering the barbarities, that are becoming visible in Bucha, and in other Ukrainian cities, all efforts of the federal government and the international community to side with Ukraine and to end russias’s barbarism and the war against Ukraine have the full support of the former chancellor,” the spokeswoman added.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to visit the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region, ruined by the Russian troops.

“I invite Mrs. Merkel and Mr. Sarkozy to visit Bucha and see the consequences of the policy of concessions to russia they had for 14 years. To see the tortured Ukrainians with their own eyes,” the president said. The Ukrainian President believes that 14 years ago during the NATO summit in Bucharest “there was a chance to take Ukraine out of the “gray zone” in Eastern Europe”, but “under the optimistic diplomatic statements that Ukraine could become a member of NATO, then, in 2008, the refusal to admit Ukraine to the North Atlantic Alliance was hidden”.
