Lithuania urges EU to recognize Russian atrocities in Ukraine as genocide

The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Lithuanian Seimas has called on EU member states to recognize russian atrocities in Ukrainian cities as genocide.

It also calls for an immediate halt to russian oil and gas imports, a ban on russian vessels entering European ports, and a halt to all land connections. This is stated in a statement condemning russia's aggression and war crimes in Ukraine.

The Committee also calls on the European Commission to provide its opinion on Ukraine's application for membership of the EU as soon as possible.

"The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania is shocked by the images of the massive crimes committed in Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, and elsewhere by the Russian army against the civilian population of Ukraine, including women and children, namely, their torture, murder, and sexual violence," the statement says.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other government officials stress that this is the genocide of the Ukrainian people. In Bucha, Irpin, Borodyanka, and other settlements that were occupied, russians tortured and killed civilians, including children.

In Mariupol, the occupiers set up mobile crematoria where the bodies of victims are burned to cover up war crimes.
