Ukraine’s application for the EU membership shall be submitted to the European Council this summer.
According to Deutsche Welle, this was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen based on the results of the meeting with the Ukrainian authorities and the visit to Bucha.
Von der Leyen emphasized that it would be “our goal” to present Ukraine’s application at the European Council this summer. She also said that the visit of her and that of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger would demonstrate the support to and assurance of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in his commitment to Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
In his Telegram channel, Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office Andriy Yermak pointed out that “we will do everything to speed up this process. …We will definitely not stop, Ukraine will be in the European Union. Our people deserve it more than anyone else. We will bring this matter to an end.”
On 8 April 2022, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmygal together with the European Commission President, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the Slovak Prime Minister visited Bucha town of the Kyiv region.
On 5 April 2022, European Commission spokesperson Eric Mamer informed that Ursula Von der Leyen and Josep Borrell would travel to Kyiv this week to meet President Zelenskiy before the “Stand Up For Ukraine” pledging event on Saturday in Warsaw.
