The Mi-17 helicopters, which were previously intended for deployment to Afghanistan, will now be provided to Ukraine as part of a new US military aid package.

This was reported by "Voice of America" with reference to the spokesman of the US Department of Defense John Kirby.

"These 11 Mi-17s were intended for Afghanistan. They come from our reserves," he said.

"Now we are sending them to Ukraine," the Pentagon spokesman added. "We have recently provided Ukraine with five Mi-17s. This is not the first time we have sent them Mi-17s."

Kirby clarified that it is not a case of Mi-17 helicopters being flown to Ukraine by American military pilots.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden briefed his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Washington's decision to provide another 800m dollars in military aid to Kyiv, which includes helicopters, armored personnel carriers, and artillery.
