“The SG António Guterres has arrived in Ukraine to meet President Zelenskyy. At his request, I am going to Zaporizhzhia to prepare, hopefully, evacuation from Mariupol. The UN is fully mobilized to help save Ukrainian lives and assist those in need,” Lubrani twitted.
The Mariupol city council stressed that severe and deadly epidemics could soon break out in the city. The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, stated that the occupants could not provide the remaining population with food, water and medicines or were not interested in doing so. They are also blocking all attempts to evacuate.
On 27 April, UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Ukraine. Before that, he visited Moscow, where he met with russian Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. The UN Secretary-General also met with Vladimir Putin. They discussed proposals for humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones because of the situation in Mariupol.
At the end of the meeting, Guterres' spokesman said that Putin had agreed to evacuate civilians from Azovstal. However, the next day, the Kremlin said that “there were no specific agreements to help evacuate civilians from Azovstal”.
Today, Guterres visited the city of Borodyanka in the Kyiv region, which russian troops razed to the ground with a variety of weapons strikes.
