The Mariupol City Council announced that it would likely be possible today to evacuate the residents of the city sieged by russians to the territory controlled by Ukraine.

“There is hope for the evacuation of Mariupol residents to the territory controlled by Ukraine. Today. From Port City. We are waiting for confirmation. We believe,” the statement reads.

Earlier, an adviser to the head of the President’s Office, Mykhailo Podoliak, said that the world is ready to help save people in Mariupol, but russia rejects all proposals.

Hundreds of civilians remain at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. In February, they came to the plant’s shelter when russia’s full-scale offensive began. They all are still waiting for the evacuation, which the enemy does not allow.

According to the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, an attempt to evacuate civilians from the plant was scheduled for 29 April. There is no updated information on this yet.

On 28 April, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready for urgent talks to evacuate people from Mariupol and counted on UN support. During the meeting between Zelenskyy and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, russia launched a missile strike on Kyiv.

Before visiting Ukraine, Guterres visited Moscow. Guterres’ spokesman said Putin had agreed to evacuate civilians from Azovstal. However, the Kremlin said that “there were no specific agreements on assistance in evacuating civilians from Azovstal” in its next-day statement.
