On Sunday Pope Francis described russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “macabre regression of humanity” and announced that the Ukrainians suffering make him cry, informs CNN.
“I am suffering and crying, thinking of the suffering of the Ukrainian population, in particular the weakest, the elderly, the children. There is also terrible news of children who are being expelled and deported,” said the Pope after finishing the prayer Regina Coeli that is devoted to the Virgin Mary.
According to the Pontifex, his thoughts are with “the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, the city of Mary, barbarously bombarded and destroyed”.
The Pope called to create “secure humanitarian corridors” for those who found the shelter at the Azovstal plant and asked, “whether everything possible is being done to silence the weapons.”
Today, in Mariupol, the evacuation of civilians from the territory of the Azovstal plant got started with the support of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Over 100 Ukrainians, including kids, women, and senior people, are moving to the territory under the control of Ukraine. The next day Zaporizhzhia will meet them. The evacuation will last on 2 May 2022.
