At the moment, there are an equivalent of two Russian battalion tactical groups - about 2,000 russian soldiers in Mariupol.
This was reported by CNN referencing the Pentagon.
About 10 battalion tactical groups that were previously involved in storming of the city are reportedly trying to advance north. The US Department of Defense believes that this is done to regroup or to create better defense positions.
The Pentagon does not rule out that the battalions that remain in Mariupol may include non-russian troops, including Kadyrov's followers.
Commander of the Azov battalion, lieutenant colonel Denis Prokopenko, in the evening on May 4, recorded a video addressing the situation at Azovstal plant in Mariupol. According to him, the enemy broke into the territory of "Azovstal", heavy fighting continues. Defenders of Mariupol are keeping the defense.
