The Board of the Pulitzer Prize recognized the courage of Ukrainian journalists during the russian attack with a special collective award, reported the website of the Pulitzer Prize.

"The Pulitzer Board awards a special citation to the journalists of Ukraine for their courage, endurance, and commitment to truthful reporting during Vladimir Putin's ruthless invasion of their country and his propaganda war in Russia. Despite bombardment, abductions, occupation, and even deaths in their ranks, they have persisted in their effort to provide an accurate picture of a terrible reality, doing honor to Ukraine and to journalists around the world," wrote the organizing committee of the Pulitzer Prize.

The journalists of the Washington Post received the prize for reporting on the assault on Washington on 6 January 2021 "providing the public with a thorough and unflinching understanding of one of the nation's darkest days".

For the photographs of the Capitol assault, the prize was given to Win McNamee, Drew Angerer, Spencer Platt, Samuel Corum, and Jon Cherry of Getty Images.

Corey G. Johnson, Rebecca Woolington, and Eli Murray of the Tampa Bay Times received the prize for the investigation of the highly toxic hazards inside Florida's only battery recycling plant that forced the implementation of safety measures to adequately protect workers and nearby residents.

The staff of The New York Times was awarded the prize for the project that quantified a disturbing pattern of fatal traffic stops by police, illustrating how hundreds of deaths could have been avoided and how officers typically avoided punishment.

The New York Times staff received another prize for the reports that exposed the vast civilian toll of U.S.-led airstrikes, challenging official accounts of American military engagements in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

The prize for the breaking news photography went to Marcus Yam of The Los Angeles Times for the images of the U.S. departure from Afghanistan that capture the human cost of the historic change in the country.

The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious journalistic prizes in the USA and the world. It has been awarded annually since 1917 for materials published in any American outlet.

Last year, Reuters and Associated Press news agencies, Atlantic magazine, and The New York Times received the prestigious prize for reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
