Ukraine demands that Germany either stop or drastically reduce the flow of natural gas in the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline.
Serhiy Makogon, the General Director of GTS Ukraine Operator, said on the air of the telethon by Radio Svoboda reports.
"Together with Naftogaz, we sent an appeal to the German Ministry of Economy to stop Nord Stream 1. This flow worked on an exceptional basis to ensure the safety of gas transportation to Europe. But after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the grounds on which Nord Stream 1 operated no longer exist. Therefore, in order to guarantee the security of our country by guaranteeing the security of our GTS, we appealed to Germany with such a request, " Makogon said.
He noted, that Ukraine is ready to provide an alternative transport route for the pipeline passing through the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
Nord Stream 1 runs through the Baltic Sea from Portova Bay (Vyborg district) to the German coast (Greifswald district). The pipeline consists of two strands 1,224 km long and has a total design capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The pipeline began supplying gas to two branches in October 2012.
Germany has already stopped the Nord Stream-2 gas project as a punishment for russia's invasion of Ukraine.
European countries are currently reducing their energy dependence on russia, which uses revenues from the sale of gas, oil and coal to finance the war against Ukraine. In April, the European Parliament called for an immediate embargo on imports of russian energy into the EU. These include the complete abandonment of Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2.
