The Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, stated that he expects from the forthcoming visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Kyiv the fulfillment of promises regarding the supply of weapons and Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

This was reported by European Pravda with reference to the German outlet Spiegel.

"We hope that during his visit to Kyiv, the chancellor will finally keep Germany's promises on arms supplies and Ukraine's accession to the EU," Melnyk said.

He noted that Ukraine needs heavy weapons, such as the German self-propelled artillery PzH 2000 and anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery Gepard.

"The announcements themselves (arms supplies) will not help us in the war against the invaders, so we are waiting for specific dates for the arrival of weapons from the chancellor, as the promises were made months ago," the ambassador added.

Melnyk also hopes that Scholz, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, will signal that Ukraine can become a candidate for EU membership.

"This would raise the fighting spirit of Ukrainians and clearly show Russia that the EU unanimously supports a free Ukraine," he concluded.

Earlier, German media reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to visit Kyiv with the President of France and the Prime Minister of Italy before the G7 summit.

Scholz promised to supply Ukraine with its state-of-the-art air defense equipment. In his speech before the Bundestag on Wednesday, he said that Germany would send the IRIS-T system to Ukrainians.
