President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal have signed a joint statement on Ukraine's strategic goal of full EU membership.

The signing took place at a parliamentary session on 1 July.

Before the session, Zelenskyy, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, addressed MPs. Leyen was speaking by video link while Zelensky was in the chamber in person.

"Signing this statement has a significance akin to signing the application for entry on the fifth day of the war. We have been walking to candidate status for 115 days. And the path to membership should not take decades," Zielenskyy stressed.
