German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Chernihiv Region today, where he was caught by an air alert, Spiegel has reported.
It is noted that Steinmeier got to Chernihiv by train and then went by car to the district centre of Koryukivka. In March 1943, Hungarian troops, who fought on the side of Nazi Germany, killed almost all the inhabitants of Koryukivka in two days. This mass murder is called the Koryukivka tragedy. Last year, Steinmeier also visited Koryukivka, and since then he has been in touch with the mayor of the town.
Today, the German president came to discuss assistance to Koryukivka in the winter period.
When Steinmeier was talking to journalists, an air alert went off. He had to go to the shelter and, as Spiegel writes, "he had to talk to civilians in a bomb shelter".
The air alert lasted about two hours.
