The explosions at the military airfield in Engels are the consequences of Russian aggression on the territory of Ukraine, the spokesman of the Air Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ihnat said during a telethon.
"Of course, these are the consequences of Russian aggression. These are the usual "cotton pops" (explosions- Ed.) that we are already used to hearing. These are the consequences of what Russia is doing on our land. If the Russians thought that they would not be affected by the war in the rear, they were wrong. Such things are happening more and more often, and we hope that it will only benefit Ukraine," he said.
Ihnat called to wait for satellite images from the airfield to see the real consequences of the explosions.
At night there were explosions at the military airfield in Engels, Saratov Region. According to the Russian media, three people were killed, but the planes were allegedly not damaged.
The Russian Defence Ministry later said that the airfield was attacked by drones.
The city of Saratov is located on the right bank of the Volga River, 458 km from the border of Ukraine. On the other bank, there is Engels, the satellite town, which serves the airbase of the same name. Earlier, Russian strategic bombers were blown up at this airfield. Russian bombers take off from this base and carry out missile strikes on Ukraine.
