Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announces $5.5 billion in aid to Ukraine. During a speech at a global forum in Tokyo, he said that on the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, he would hold an online G7 summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, The Guardian reports.

Kishida said Japan was quick to react because of “strong concern that Ukraine may be tomorrow’s East Asia”.

"There is still a need to help people whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the war and to rebuild the destroyed infrastructure. We have decided to provide additional financial support of $5.5 billion," Agence France-Presse quoted the prime minister as saying.

On 1 February, Japan announced another $170 million for Ukraine's recovery. Tokyo has been consistently supporting Ukraine and has joined Western sanctions against Russia.
