A civilian airport may be opened in Ukraine by the end of the war, the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, has said in a speech at the Hudson Institute, Ekonomichna Pravda reports.

However, he did not specify which facility was chosen for this purpose and when it is planned to resume its work.

According to Ukrayinska Pravda sources, it is a city in western Ukraine.

Yermak also focused on the importance of strengthening Ukraine's air defence. He noted that "Ukraine needs a reliable umbrella" and that "we are already working on this with our partners".

"This is a sign that a turning point in the war is approaching. The next year will be crucial in this regard," Yermak said.

The airspace over Ukraine was closed on 24 February 2024. Poland has said it is ready to help Ukraine rebuild its airports after the war.

Europe's largest low-cost airline Ryanair has said it is considering resuming a small number of flights to Ukraine by the end of this year, provided Ukraine successfully negotiates a partial reopening of its airspace.
