The European Commission is preparing concessions to Prime Minister Viktor Orban to get over Hungary's blocking of €50bn in aid to Ukraine, the Financial Times reports, citing several European officials.
In particular, the European Commission is ready to give Hungary the right to stop the agreement on financing Ukraine halfway through in 2025. That is, Hungary will be able to initiate a review of the terms of the agreement to assess the extent to which Ukraine needs funding and whether it has met the EU's requirements for receiving funds.
Moreover, the European Commission is not opposed to annual aid reviews and the introduction of an "emergency brake" clause for aid to Ukraine, when an EU member state can bring up the issue of suspending payments to Ukraine. At the same time, this will not provide Hungary with an additional opportunity to veto funding.
