A Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group tried to enter Sumy Region at night. The Russians were stopped by border guards, the Interior Ministry said.
The subversive reconnaissance group was moving from the Russian side. The number of saboteurs was not specified.
They immediately opened fire with small arms and grenade launchers.
"Russians retreated, their losses are being clarified," the statement said.
