The Ukrainian Navy has reported another destroyed Russian ship. This time, however, the situation is unique: it is a tanker that could not even sink because it was already aground.
According to the Navy on its Facebook page, the Mekhanik Pogodin, owned by a Russian company from St. Petersburg, was arrested in 2018 and remained in the port of Kherson until the summer of 2023. After the Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Reservoir, the tanker was washed downstream and was beached on the shore of the temporarily occupied Kinburn Spit.
The Russians set up a reconnaissance post and installed electronic warfare equipment on the vessel, which was no longer suitable for maritime operations. FPV drones were also used to launch attacks from there.
On 11 March, the control centre on the tanker was destroyed by a successful strike by the Ukrainian Air Force, as the vessel met the definition of a military objective.
