The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported that it has prevented a Russian sabotage at a strategically important Ukrzaliznytsya facility. As a result of a special operation in Poltava Region, two FSB agents were detained red-handed. The offenders tried to blow up a section of the railway line connecting the central and eastern Regions of Ukraine.
To carry out the sabotage, they put an improvised explosive device near the tracks and the rolling stock power supply system. The attackers planned to detonate the explosives using a remote control. However, the suspects did not have time to do so, as they were detained by the SBU right at the scene.
In the event of a bombing, the occupiers hoped to disrupt the logistics routes for the supply of weapons, ammunition and fuel to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The SBU seized mobile phones from the detainees, which they used to coordinate their criminal actions with their Russian curator, a career officer of the 5th FSB Service. The perpetrator has already been identified by the SBU. It was he who set the agents the task of committing sabotage on the railway during the period of massive air attacks by the Russians on Ukraine's critical infrastructure on 21-22 March this year.
According to the investigation, the enemy accomplices were residents of Kyiv and Kharkiv Regions.
SBU investigators have served both detainees a notice of suspicion under Part 2 Article 28, Part 2 Article 113 (sabotage committed under martial law by prior conspiracy by a group of persons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The offenders are in custody. They face life imprisonment.
