The Security Service of Ukraine has served a notice of suspicion to a Russian Guard general who commanded the dispersal of peaceful protests during the occupation of Kherson Region.

This is stated in a statement by the SBU press centre.

SBU officers have collected evidence against another Russian war criminal involved in mass repressions against civilians during the occupation of Kherson Region.

It is Lieutenant General Vladimir Spiridonov, the commander of the Ural District of the Russian Guard.

At the beginning of the full-scale war, the official took part in the seizure of Kherson Region and attempts to suppress the resistance movement in the region.

"During the dispersal of peaceful protests in the centre of Kherson and other seized districts of the region, the occupiers imprisoned several hundred participants in Russian prisons. To do this, the official used four tactical groups, a special forces unit and an operational unit of the Southern District of the Russian Guard, where he was deputy commander at the time," the agency said.

In addition, the victims were subjected to numerous forms of torture, which the racists used to break down resistance to the Kremlin regime.

On the eve of the liberation of the right bank of Kherson Region, the defendant organised the transfer of subordinate units of the Russian Guard to the left bank of the region, and he fled to Russia, where he was later promoted.

Based on the evidence collected, SBU investigators served Spyridonov a notice of suspicion in absentia under the Criminal Code of Ukraine (planning, preparation, unleashing and waging an aggressive war by prior conspiracy by a group of persons).

Comprehensive measures are currently underway to find and punish the Russian war criminal.
